Michael S. Hart (pglaf.org)
Michael Stern Hart, inventor or the ebook and founder of
Project Gutenberg died this week. Professor Hart is an example of what an unselfish dedication to helping others can yield. In 1971, he typed a copy of the
Declaration of Independence and put it on a computer bulletin board. Today
Project Gutenberg lists over 36,000 public domain books.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Doyle, War and Peace by Tolstoy, Walden by Thoreau, Dubliners by Joyce and every other classic you would need for a degree in literature. All free, most in the popular ebook formats. It’s one of the great treasures of the web. I applaud Professor Hart’s example of service and morn his passing. Read his obituary on Gutenberg.org.
By the way, you don’t have to buy a commercial ebook reader to enjoy the classics from Project Gutenberg. Calibre, an open source library management tool, will organize your ebooks for you and provide a reader for viewing them.
